doors

Doors are underappreciated.....they get slammed, banged, kicked, swung, knocked on, slid under, broken, busted, folded, knocked down, bolted, and shut. Yet they provide access to every wall we pass through and every threshold we cross and more importantly they protect us from anything on the opposite side.

There are more than two sides to any door yet some are hidden. They can be screen, glass, wood, metal, fiberglass, masonite, and/or any other combination of materials, yet they are rarely repaired. They squeak, creak, grind, grate, scrape, scratch, and screech, but are rarely silent unless they are soundproof.

They have policies (as in open door) and even an international association yet, they can be crooked, warped and unhinged. Is it me or does that sound like the definition of a politician? Doors have versions for the front, back, side, barn, fire, and exit. There are doors for sliding, a pocket, a garage, an elevator, the interior, the exterior, storms, and some specifically for the French. Accessories include knobs, hinges, locks, handles, levers, buzzers, push bars, peep holes, latches, and hooks.

People use doors to describe a direction for example, "she's 3 Doors Down on the left," or describe them with an obscure accordian reference. There was a musical group of doors in the 60's that passed themselves off as a rock and roll band and have influenced many bands since. A majority of these influential bands have been reported over the years to have taken out some form of aggression (as noted above) on the hotel variety of door. At the same time, everyone imagines what goes on behind them when they are closed.

Doors are treated equally regardless of color but not weight. We swing a heavy brown door slowly and slam a screen door by accident. We can raise a garage door by remote and get our pets to go out through a flap of a door within a door just so we don't have to open it manually.

Just hinge 'em and forget 'em that's our secret motto. Doors are underappreciated yet we sometimes find their knobs more interesting to talk to than anyone else and are much better listeners than most. Perhaps next time a threshold is crossed, it will be appreciated for that split second prior to the spring loaded thing kicking you in the back on your way out the front.
