walls

walls are tough......
Walls are made of stone, brick, concrete block, gyp board and more. They stop us from moving, passing by, going through, and entering or exiting. Walls have duality and three dimensions. They are thick and thin; internal and external; opaque and clear; short and tall. Walls have been run into, torn down, rebuilt, hit, climbed, painted, punched, and kicked. Humpty Dumpty sat on one. In China they have a great one, Berlin tore their wall down, and almost anyone who has run a marathon knows what hitting a wall really feels like as opposed to falling off one a la humpty dumpty.

There are streets dedicated to the wall; one in particular is associated with stocks, bonds, wealth, and greed, as well as a newspaper. There is even a Township in New Jersey with the name. On the street around construction sites there are a slurry of walls; along this perimeter, holes in the walls provide a peek at progress of the facades. Many are tagged with graffiti while protecting people from meandering into a danger zone.

Retaining one's walls is sometimes a task. Hadrian built large and lavish walls whose marble were then pilfered by generations thereafter the fall, yet bearing walls are still standing. Some walls retain earth others retain memories like the black wall in DC and the Pink Floyd version. Some retain water and use terms like dike or levee while others are a mental place of gathering on Facebook.

Walls tend to use many synonyms and adjectives like green monster, wailing, curtain, bulwark, hurdle, palisade, rampart, parapet, western, and shared. there are many parts and accessories to a wall; foundations, moisture barriers, stud, block, wallpaper, paint, wallboard, trim, chair rails, parapets, footings, baseboard, molding, blueboard, tile, shelving, sconces, switches, thermostats, hooks, pegboards, picture moulding, and apertures. Walls are both complex and comforting. They keep the scary monsters away at night and provide shade in the daytime. Too close and padded is usually uncomfortable. And always remember too many sugar imbibed kids in one place bouncing off the walls can drive one right up the wall!
